A Special Brass Tarnished By Time
Brass on its own is an amazing metal that is still as popular now as it was a hundred years ago. But when it is blended with an warm patina, the result lends itself to a range of styles that fuses art with science. A surface coated with our Naturally Oxidized Antique Brass finish is a living material which develops a charismatic patina.
This paint effect, like our other oxidized effects, contains miniaturized and superficially passivated metal powders that are oxidized directly on the surface. For the Antique Brass effect, brass powder is naturally oxidized to produce various shades and shapes of aged green patina.
The transformation of the surface happens when the oxidizing solution or activator is squirted on the surface. The liquid is then absorbed into the brass metal and after just a few hours of oxidization, the surface begins to form a patina that will continue to evolve as the activator oxidizes the brass particles. The finished surface becomes a one-of-one textured surface with vibrant green patina colors.

Oxidized Brass Effect on TableEach of the paints that make this amazing effect are two-component solvent-based acrylic spray paints. After the effect is finished, a polyurethane matte topcoat is applied to seal, protect and make a resistant surface that is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
The application of the paints are not difficult, but it is important to understand how to spray the paints for best results. They can be applied on plastics, wood, and metal surfaces. To achieve the best adhesion, the primer is changed to suit the surface. And lastly, the paints need be sprayed inside a clean room or paint shop to create the optimal oxidized effect.

To see the application of this unique effect and especially how the activator is applied to develop a antique green patina, watch this demonstration video.
A key factor that effects how the surface is oxidized is the position and type of surface. As an example:
- When the oxidization liquid is squirted on VERTICAL or curved surfaces, the activator liquid will run down the material and the outcome is a surface that features streaks of oxidization. This can lead to a lighter oxidized effect where it is necessary to re-apply the oxidizing liquid multiple times to achieve the desired aged brass effect
- For HORIZONTAL and flat surfaces, the oxidization solution creates pools of liquid that concentrate the oxidization reaction on the surface to develop areas with various hues of green patina
The application surface or shape does not matter, they both will achieve beautifully oxidized finishes that are one-of-a-kind. However, the depth and color of the aged patina will be different because the surfaces are different. This is what makes this Antique Brass effect special.
This paint effect can be sprayed on the following surfaces:
- Wood
- Metal (Iron, Aluminium, Brass, etc.)
- Plastics (ABS, ABS-PC, etc.)
- Glass
Objects painted with this effect can be used on internal or external objects when finished with a suitable transparent topcoat to seal and protect the surface. For industrial and artisanal applications, we recommend using a roller. For the application of artefacts (e.g., gates, windows, stairs, mezzanine) you can also use a roller or a brush, but some paints need to be sprayed for best results.
The colors in the pictures are for reference only. In order to evaluate the effect, we suggest to order a sample kit of this paint effect. The sample kit will contains 1 kg of each paint needed to make the effect. We supply primer, Antique Brass paints, matte topcoat and hardener and thinner for spraying. This can paint a 5 m2 area.
