Concrete Effect Paint

Concrete Effect Paint

A Realistic Cement Finish with Trowel or Spray Application

For centuries cement was only thick and heavy. This, of course, was ideal for structural building, but not so nice for interior design that requires a lighter industrial feel.

In collaboration with designer and architects, Cromas Paints developed a line of lightweight concrete paints that transforms cement from a basic building material into a distinctive decorative style with a final thickness of only 2-3 mm. These paints are versatile water-based products are applied with a trowel on flat surfaces such as walls and furniture to achieve a textured concrete look you can see and feel. While other surfaces that are curved, angled or detailed, the paints are sprayed to develop a more uniform concrete texture.

The paints are water-based resins with low VOC levels, so they are environmentally friendly. The base paints are available as a medium grey color, but with the addition of water-based tinting pigments, any color can be created to suit the design.

The Concrete Paint Effects feature five styles that can be made into many colours.

RAW CONCRETE  —   URBAN CONCRETE  —  AGED CONCRETE

               SMOOTH CONCRETE  —  MODERN CONCRETE

The key difference between the five styles is how the Concrete paints are finished.
  • In the Raw Concrete effect, only the concrete paint is applied to create a new realistic cement surface
  • For the Urban Concrete and Aged Concrete effects, the Raw Concrete paints are applied and then the U-Sheet patina is added to the surface to create an aged or old look to the cement. The amount of patina applied to the surface varies depending on the desired look for the finished effect
  • In the Smooth Concrete Effect, this uses only the Smooth Concrete base to produce a smoother surface with a real concrete look
  • For the Modern Concrete, this effect starts with the Smooth Concrete base and then the U-Sheet patina is rubbed on the surface to develop an old-world look

Application Process…

The Concrete paints are not difficult to apply and no special equipment is needed besides a metal trowel and paint roller. The paints are applied in layers to build up the concrete effect and give strength to the finished surface.
  • As with all our effects, a primer is applied based on the surface. Most often this is applied with a roller, but our solvent-based spray primers can also be used depending on the material to be painted
  • The Concrete paints are spread on the surface with a metal trowel in two thin layers. This produces a realistic concrete effect with trowel marks like in real cement, but the finish is only 2-3 mm thick. If you want a thicker finish, you can certainly apply more concrete paint
  • The application of the U-Sheet Patina is what changes the finish from a new concrete look like Raw Concrete or Smooth Concrete into an old concrete finish. The U-Sheet is ready-to-apply colored paper that will transfer a contrasting color to the surface to create our Urban Concrete, Aged Concrete and Modern Concrete effects. The amount of the patina rubbed on the surface can be light or heavy depending on the effect you want. Our system allows the user to completely customize the finish.
  • The Concrete Effects are completed with the roller application of a matte topcoat to seal, protect and offer good resistance to the finish

As with all our effects, we suggest to make application tests to understand how to apply the concrete paint and the U-Sheet patina to get the desired results.

This video demonstrates the trowel application process for the Raw Concrete Paint Effect on a wall surface. Click the link to watch the video.

In this application video, the Concrete Paint Effect products are the same, but the application is by spray gun. The finished effects are the Aged Concrete and Urban Concrete Effects.

These concrete effects were developed for interior wall surfaces because the trowel application process gives the surface a real concrete look and feel. However, you can also spray the paints that results in a more uniform concrete finish. There are many surfaces and materials that can be painted with this effect and we only change the primer so the paints have good adhesion to the material. The surfaces include:

  • Wall Surfaces of Gypsum, Cement, Block
  • Furniture, Doors and Decorative Items
  • Wood and MDF Surfaces
  • Metal including Iron, Aluminium, Brass etc.
  • Plastics Materials such as ABS, ABS-PC, etc.
These pictures showcase the many options for the spray application of the Concrete Paint Effect. The spray application results in a more even appearance of the concrete paint when compared to a trowel application. In the close-up picture, you can see the even aspect of the surface that also has a nice texture.
To better understand the application and to see and feel the finish concrete effect, we suggest to order a sample kit of this paint effect. The sample kit will have 2-3 kg of the concrete paint and 1 kg of the other paints needed to make the effect. We supply primer, concrete paints and topcoat for a trowel or spray application. These paints can cover a 3 m2 area. The colors and textures on this page are for reference only.
