Naturally Simulate A Verdigris Patina
Time has the power to change everything! This phrase has never been more true than when copper is left to weather outside for years to develop the much-loved Verdigris patina. This classic look instantly gives a surface or object a feel of antiquity while the blue-green patina shields and protects the surface.
To capture is antique feel, the Cromas R&D team has created an spectacular paint effect that naturally re-creates this weathered look with our Naturally Oxidized Verdigris effect. This paint effect contains miniaturized and superficially passivated copper particles that are oxidized directly on the painted surface to produce vivid blue-green patina colors. The most important part of the process is the squirting of the oxidizing solution on the surface and the amount of time it takes the solution to be absorbed. After just a few hours of oxidization, the surface begins to form a patina and will continue to change as the activator oxidizes the copper particles. The result will be a one-of-a-kind textured surface with patina colors in various shapes and shades.

Verdigris on WoodEach of the paints that make this amazing effect are two-component solvent-based acrylic spray paints. On top of that is the polyurethane matte topcoat that is applied to make a resistant surface that is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
The application of the paints are not difficult, but it is important to understand how to spray the paints for best results. They can be applied on plastics, wood, and metal surfaces. To achieve the best adhesion, the primer is changed to suit the surface. And lastly, the paints need be sprayed inside a clean room or paint shop to create the optimal oxidized effect.
Besides the VERDIGRIS paint effect, this series of effects also includes four other beautiful and naturally oxidized paint effects: Antique Brass — Rust — Antique Bronze — Antique Copper. Click on the name to visit the page for these other paint effects.
To see the application of this unique effect and especially how the activator is applied to develop a Verdigris patina, watch these demonstration videos.
A key factor of this effect is how the oxidization solution is applied to the surface because this will have a direct impact on the finished surface. As an example:
- When the oxidization liquid is squirted on VERTICAL surfaces, the activator will run down the material and result in a leaching effect where the surface shows streaks of oxidization. Because this can give a lighter Verdigris effect, it may be necessary to apply more oxidizing liquid to make the desired Verdigris effect
- For HORIZONTAL surfaces, the liberal application of the oxidization solution shows pools of liquid on the surface that form areas of oxidization that can have various colors
In the end, both application positions will create a naturally oxidized surface that looks like it has been outdoors for many years, but the amount and the color of the patina will be different.
This paint effect can be sprayed on the following surfaces:
- Wood
- Metal (Iron, Aluminium, Brass, etc.)
- Plastics (ABS, ABS-PC, etc.)
- Glass
Objects painted with this effect can be used on internal or external objects when finished with a suitable transparent topcoat to seal and protect the surface. For industrial and artisanal applications, we recommend using a roller. For the application of artefacts (e.g., gates, windows, stairs, mezzanine) you can also use a roller or a brush, but some paints need to be sprayed for best results.
The colors in the pictures are for reference only. In order to evaluate the effect, we suggest to order a sample kit of this paint effect. The sample kit will contains 1 kg of each paint needed to make the effect. We supply primer, Verdigris paints, matte topcoat and hardener and thinner for spraying. This can paint a 5 m2 area.
